As the name suggests, domestic weighing scales are usually used in your house. Characteristics of a Domestic weighing scale are

  1. They are sparingly used. Maybe once or twice a day.

  2. They are usually Non-Metallic. Made of Tough ABS body or Glass body.

  3. They look good and fancy. They are usually colorful and have a very sleek design.

  4. They may not be as accurate as an Industrial or Commercial Weighing Scale.

Some people also use these scales in office premises to weigh letters and other small things.

    1. Have a Silica Gel packet in the weighing scale box.

Make sure that when you get the weighing scale, you do not throw away the box in which it arrived. Preserve it. Slip a Silica Gel pouch into it, if its not already there. This will help protect the scale from moisture, which is the number one killer of any electronic circuit.

    2. Keep away from Moisture and Extreme Heat

Even though you have taken enough precautions to keep the moisture out of the box, avoid using the scale in places where there is excessive moisture, and avoid weighing directly on the scale. Put your bowl, press the tare button, and then weigh your ingredients. This will make sure water seepage into the scale is minimum. Also don’t leave the scale next to an open flame or a hot stove. This may permanently damage the ABS body, the LCD screen, and the electronic circuits inside it.

    3. Remove the batteries if not going to be used for a long time

Since a domestic scale is sparingly used, and if you don’t use it for a long time, the batteries inside the scale will start leaking. This is extremely common in Personal and Bathroom scales. Once the batteries have eaten away the electrodes, your scale becomes useless. I would recommend that you always remove the batteries from the scale when you are going out on a vacation.

    4. Keep on a stable surface.

DON’T store the weighing scale on top of your microwave. No, it will not explode. But because the microwave is a vibrating surface, the vibrations tend to loosen the screws, connectors, and solders inside the weighing scale, giving you many problems that you might not face otherwise. Also, store the weighing scales away from powerful magnets like a strong transformer or a generator. This usually harms the internal components of the weighing scale.

    5. Use it gently.

Put the items gently on the weighing scale. Scales are normally designed to take up to 120% of full load capacity. That means that if your weighing scale is rated for 10 kgs, even if you put 12 kgs on its platter, it will not spoil. Just show you overweight. However, remember that the Loadcell is always rated in kg f, that is, kilogram-force. So in case, the impact of the material on the weighing platter is more than 120% of the full load capacity, the Loadcell will permanently get damaged. Hence keep your items gently on the weighing scale.
